GERIATRIC BEHAVIORAL UNIT

The GRACE Unit is a 10-bed, secured inpatient unit dedicated to treating older adults with acute behavioral health issues. We offer a safe environment for those who may be struggling with the challenges of every day life in their current setting. Patients are referred from skilled nursing facilities, senior housing, hospitals and emergency rooms, or friends and family members of the patient.

The GRACE program is committed to optimizing the quality of life for older adults.  Our goal is to enhance self-esteem and dignity, identify and emphasize abilities rather than disabilities, and promote optimal independence.  Consistent with our holistic treatment philosophy, emphasis is placed on the healing of mind, body and spirit.

The GRACE Unit staff is supervised by a board-certified psychiatrist and medical director who have specialized training in senior care. Other members of the GRACE Unit treatment team include a 24-hour Psychiatric Nursing Staff, Social Services, Occupational, Physical and Activity Therapists.

Psychiatric evaluations, medical assessments, and care planning are continuously provided throughout the patient's stay at the GRACE Unit. Other components such as therapeutic exercise, group activities, pastoral care and family involvement are incorporated into the program.

Great value is placed on support from family, friends and community. These relationships are vital and help determine the level of independence the older adult will be able to maintain upon discharge.

Any concerned person can make a referral to the program or an older adult may make a self-referral.  Individuals who would benefit from the GRACE Behavioral Health Unit may include those who are struggling with:
  • Extended feelings of depression or anxiety
  • Marked changes in mood
  • Excessive feelings of anger and aggressive behaviors
  • A sudden onset of forgetfulness and/or an inability to concentrate
  • A decrease in one's ability to care for one's self
  • Alcohol abuse or excessive use of prescription medications
  • Seeing or hearing things that others do not see or hear
  • Issues related to changing health status, roles, and illness or disability
  • Concerns about personal safety
